16th Kaohsiung Pride: #Voting with Pride
Voting has become a routine part of life in Taiwan. Every two years, whether for local or national elections, we rally to vote for the issues we care about.
Kaohsiung Pride is deeply connected to elections. As the largest platform for LGBTQ+ in southern Taiwan, we have long advocated for issues like gender equality, bodily autonomy, and labor rights. But after Taiwan became the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, some have questioned: "Why do we still march?"
Because our fight is far from over! Marriage equality was just one step. Without continuous efforts, gender equality will never be realized. At this moment, we are still facing problems such as the urban-rural gap in gender resources and the lack of gender-friendly space construction. In the workplace and on campus, many LGBTQ+ people are still bullied because of their gender expression or sexual/gender identity... The road to gender equality is still long!
"Casting our vote" means that we are handing over the "power to decide the future" to these politicians, so we cannot take it lightly. Gender equality is like rowing against the current, progress is slow, but if we relax, it will be easy to return to the starting point. Kaohsiung has also had painful experiences. Remember that Han Kuo-yu once served as the mayor of Kaohsiung? Less than two years into his term, former Mayor Han has shaken up Kaohsiung's efforts toward gender equality. He "selected anti-gay people to serve as gender equality advisors in the city government" and "used various letters and orders to force various departments to act conservatively." These actions forced LGBTQ+-friendly organizations to spend more time and effort on advocacy. During this period, Kaohsiung Pride has not been absent. We and other LGBTQ+-friendly organizations have continued to submit proposals and hold discussions with the government, hoping that the power of civic groups can help the Kaohsiung City Government become a more LGBTQ+-friendly local government!
Next year, Taiwan will hold another round of local elections. As voters, we must unite to support candidates who prioritize gender equality and make LGBTQ+ rights a winning issue. No matter where we live, we need leaders who will stand for inclusivity.
Let’s raise our voices and demand real change! As citizens, we will vote with pride and back gender-inclusive candidates, ensuring they have the political support needed to create a more equal society.
